The Syrian Hamster's Wild Origins in Syria

Almost every Syrian hamster in the world is a Syrian in the literal sense. The species was described scientifically in 1839 by George Robert Waterhouse, from a specimen collected in Syria, and then effectively vanished from the record for nearly a century. What brought it back was a parasitologist who needed a laboratory animal and a zoologist willing to dig for one.
April 1930, outside Aleppo
Saul Adler, working in Jerusalem on leishmaniasis, wanted an animal model closer to the disease's behaviour in humans than the Chinese hamsters he was importing with difficulty. He asked his colleague Israel Aharoni, a zoologist at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, to find the golden hamster described a century earlier.
Aharoni travelled to the country around Aleppo in spring 1930 with a local guide, Georius Khalil Tah'an. On 12 April 1930, in a wheat field, they dug down roughly eight feet and reached a nest containing a female and her young. Accounts differ slightly on the numbers, with eleven young in some tellings and ten in others; the substance is the same.
What followed was close to a failure. The mother killed some of the litter and was in turn killed. Of the animals that reached Jerusalem, five chewed through a wooden cage and escaped. One male killed a female. Three survived to breed, and a brother-and-sister pairing produced the first captive litters. Within a year the colony numbered around 150 animals.
Aharoni recorded the local name for the animal, which translates roughly as "mister saddlebags" - a description of the cheek pouches that run from the cheeks back to the shoulders and that a hamster fills with grain before returning underground.
From Jerusalem to the world
Adler sent breeding stock to England in 1931, where the animals came to Edward Hindle and the Zoological Society of London and to the Wellcome Bureau of Scientific Research. In 1938 three colonies reached the United States, two from Adler and one from Israel Jacob Kligler; Case Western Reserve University received thirteen animals on 26 July 1938, and Guy Henry Faget's laboratory received twelve the same month. In the 1940s Albert Marsh's Gulf Hamstery in California turned the animal into a commercial pet, with peak trade between 1948 and 1951.
The genetic consequence is unusual and well documented. The MSD Veterinary Manual states that most pet Syrian hamsters descend from three litter-mates caught in 1930. Later expeditions brought a small number of wild animals into captivity, but they contributed little to the pet population, and comparative work has found the genetic diversity of laboratory golden hamsters considerably reduced relative to wild-derived stock. Every colour mutation in the hobby - cream, black, long-haired, banded, dominant spot - arose within that narrow founding line.
It is worth pausing on the scale of that. A globally distributed domestic animal, kept in the millions, tracing to one burrow in one field on one day.
The wild hamster, then and now
For decades it was unclear whether wild golden hamsters still existed at all. The question was settled by two expeditions led from the University of Halle, in September 1997 and March 1999. The team caught six females and seven males at sites near Aleppo, one of the females pregnant and delivering six pups, and they mapped 30 burrows while investigating the structure of 23.
The findings, published in the Journal of Zoology in 2001, are the best description available of how the species actually lives:
- Burrow depths from 36 to 106cm, averaging 65cm
- A simple plan: one vertical entrance shaft, a nest chamber, and at least one food chamber
- Gallery systems averaging 200cm in total length, occasionally extending to 900cm
- No inhabited burrow containing more than one adult
- Most burrows on cultivated fields, preferentially in leguminous crops
That last point is the species' predicament in a sentence. The golden hamster is an animal of arable land, living in fields that people farm, eating what those fields produce. It is easier to find where agriculture is, and it is destroyed by the same agriculture.
The habitat is harsher than most owners imagine. On the Aleppinian Plateau summer midday temperatures reach 35 to 38°C and drop to between 6 and 15°C at night, winters average around 10°C, and annual rainfall is roughly 336mm. Wild hamsters live 1.5 to 2 years on average, roughly half what a well-kept pet manages. Conservation status
The IUCN Red List classifies Mesocricetus auratus as Vulnerable. The wild range is restricted to the Aleppinian Plateau across northern Syria and southern Turkey, a small area of occupancy, and the assessment identifies continuing habitat loss and pest-control measures as the principal threats, with the population trend decreasing. Animal Diversity Web lists the same pressures: habitat destruction, poisoning campaigns and trapping as a crop pest.
The paradox is worth stating clearly. The golden hamster is simultaneously one of the most abundant mammals in human care and a threatened species in the wild. Those two populations do not exchange animals in any meaningful way. A pet hamster cannot be released into Syria, its ancestors left in 1930, and its line has been bred for over 90 generations under conditions nothing like the plateau. The captive population is a safeguard against extinction of the species in the abstract sense only; it does nothing for the wild one.
Since 2011, field research in northern Syria has been effectively impossible, and there is no recent published survey of how the wild population has fared through more than a decade of conflict, displacement and disrupted agriculture. That absence of data is itself part of the picture.
Why the history matters to a keeper
It is not only a good story. Three details from it bear directly on how the animal should be housed.

Nearly a century after a wheat field outside Aleppo, the animal has barely changed. The habits that look like quirks in a plastic cage were solutions to a specific place, and the closer a keeper's setup gets to that place, the fewer problems the hamster has.
